Sounding more like a drab, utilitarian motorway, the unglamorously titled N222 doesn’t hint at the magnificent beauty of its surroundings nor the enticingly tight corners and straights that make it such a thrilling driving road. Cutting through the glorious, verdant Douro valley of north Portugal’s wine region, the N222 is sandwiched between steeply terraced vineyards and the banks of the sparkling River Douro. In 2015, a 17-mile stretch between Pinhao and Peso da Regua was named the ‘world’s best driving road’ by car hire company Avis. But Zoom-Zoom recommends you go further and take the road up into the hillsides, where sweeping bends and demanding hairpins take you through pretty villages and offer spectacular views across this Unesco World Heritage site.
