Zoom in... OWNER Iker Lafuente Andonegui CAR 2006 Sport Prestige Limited II RX-8 LOCATION Bermeo, Spain Driving around his local town of Bermeo in northern Spain, kids stop playing to stare at Iker Lafuente Andonegui’s Mazda RX-8 with admiration, intrigued by a beautiful sports car they can’t identify because it was born before they were. Iker, a technician in an engineering company, has been interested in cars since he was a kid too, and has always had an appreciation for what he calls “Mazda’s think different mentality”. So, in 2010 he bought himself a brand-new Mazda3. A few years later, he saw a copper red Mazda RX-8 advertised online and, as he’d been thinking of getting a sportier car for a while, he contacted the seller. That’s when the 30-year-old’s “dream came true” and he became the proud owner of an RX-8. As luck would have it, the seller took a shine to Iker’s Mazda3, so the two men exchanged cars. “We were both in love with each other’s cars,” laughs Iker. “We simply swapped keys and never talked about money.” Iker soon discovered his RX-8 was a Sport Prestige Limited special edition model, one of only 60 sold in Spain. Feeling lucky to own such a unique model, he regularly treats it to the same engine oil used by the Le Mans-winning 787B race car, that he orders specially from Japan. He’s also made a number of modifications to the car, including a personalised steering wheel and a badge he designed himself. On weekends Iker likes nothing better than taking the RX-8 out for a drive. And the twisty mountain roads and stunning coastline of the Basque country are the perfect playground. “When I’m driving I wind down the windows and switch off the radio just so I can hear the noise of the motor,” he smiles. “Everybody should drive one of these cars, at least once in their lives.” Mazda Hero Interview: Anna Fearon; Photography: Gianfranco Tripodo
